Sad, but OK

This past weekend, my father-in-law, Len, went to the hospital. He had been suffering with pancreatic cancer that was diagnosed in December of 2004. The first few months he fought it well and the treatments he was given were working. After about 5-6 months, the growth was unrecognizable on any tests.

Well the growth came back and he was really feeling the effects of it, especially the last 4 weeks. On Sunday night, we received a call from my wife's mother that Len probable had days to go. On Monday afternoon, we got the call that it was down to hours and to come to the hospital to say our good-byes.

When I got to the hospital, he was just laying there, staring and unresponsive. He was just breathing and at times taking long amounts of time to get one breath. I was able to stay for about an hour and a half, then I had to go pick-up our daughter from the day-care. I held his hand, said my good-byes, and kissed him on the forehead. I know that even though he was not responsive that he knew were all there (we being my wife, my mother-in-law, and my brother-in-law).

After I picked-up our daughter and got home, we weren't in the door five minutes when the phone wrang and my wife informed me that Len had died. It was very peaceful the way he went...he took one last breath and that was that. It was actually beautiful the fact that his wife and children got to be there and he died with them at his bedside.

Life is such a mystery. How can some people smoke cigarettes and never get a severe illness like Emphasema and others like Len can lead such a healthy life and die of cancer?

He was a Vietnam veteran and received a Purple Heart after an amunition shed exploded, sending shrapnel into his body. He recovered ok, but never really talked at all about his battle experiences. Over the years he did open up about his time in Korea and his touring the country after he recovered from his injuries.

My wife has been taking this very well. Her attitude is that he is in a much better place and that he not suffering anymore. My mother-in-law was affected by this tremendously while he suffered! Their lives changed so much after he got originally diagnosed, especially with trips to doctors, not knowing if he was going to live and how long, and having to make plans when he dies. They hardly ever went out towards the end and did not have much of lives. It was sad to see their lives affected like this. One good thing was that they watched our daughter on Thursdays. She helped take their minds off of their problems and brought a lot of joy and happiness into their otherwise tough lives! It is weird saying this, but it is good that he is gone so that the burden my mother-in-law has been carrying has been lifted and she can start living her life again.

Yes, I am sad that he is gone and still shed tears everyday for him. But there is always a silver lining in dark clouds. He is happy and in his moving on to heaven, my wife's family is better. We will always carry memories of him in our hearts and it is our belief that we will see him again someday that always keeps us optimistic.

I am most grateful for all of the heartfelt support with thoughts and prayers family and friends have given us during this time. There are many who have gone through this and know what we are feeling. These positive energies are being felt and a mere thank you does not seem like enough.

To you Len, I dedicate this Blog and want to thank you for all that you gave me and all you taught me. I know you are resting in Peace.

World's Dumbest Criminal Part 5264

Here is a story I read about at the Darwin Awards website (http://www.darwinawards.com/):

The following mind-boggling attempt at a crime spree appeared to be the robber's first, due to his lack of a previous record of violence, and his terminally stupid choices:
1. His target was H&J Leather & Firearms. A gun shop.
2. The shop was full of customers - firearms customers.
3. To enter the shop, the robber had to step around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door.
4. A uniformed officer was standing at the counter, having coffee before work.
Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a holdup, and fired a few wild shots. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, covered by several customers who also drew their guns, thereby removing the confused criminal from the gene pool.
No one else was hurt.

Xbox Part II - PATIENCE

So my wife and I on Friday found a great deal on an XBox and bought it, winning an auction on eBay. We also found a set of games that we bought. We were pretty excited as we felt we got both at good prices and could not wait for them to arrive.
Sure enough, on Monday, the games were waiting for me at our front door. They were delivered in a very timely manner in good condition and when I opened the box, the games themselves were in good shape and worth the money we paid. I gave the seller high marks as far as comments go on eBay.
So much for a great deal on the actual XBox system. We immediately paid for both items on Friday using PayPal. So far we have not heard ANYTHING from the seller of the system! We waited a few days, then I sent a message through eBay asking if he received my payment and if he shipped our item(s). No response. Today I sent another message and after finding his direct e-mail address on the automatic e-mail eBay sent me confirming I won, I sent a direct e-mail to the seller's e-mail account asking the same things. As of right now, still no response either in the form of an eBay message or a response from the e-mail I sent.
This is so odd because the seller has high marks from everyone that he has sold stuff to. On Friday, I sent a message to him asking him about the system and he immediately responded. Now he has not responded to ONE of my messages!
I don't know if he is having problems with his computer, problems with his eBay, is out of town, or even if he has taken us to the cleaners! I know it has only been 5 days, but usually there is some correspondence after a day or two.
So the word for today is patience and if I do not hear from him soon, some further action is going to be required on my part. Stay tuned!!!

XBox Is A LOT Of Work!!!

Editors Note: I had typed something different previous to this, then my lovely computer chose to close my internet browser and I lost everything I typed. So now you are getting the cliff-notes version of what I previously typed.
Lisa and I decided this week to buy a used XBox. A year ago some friends of mine got me hooked on Halo and Halo2 and we get together in a "male bonding" setting every couple of months to play. When we play, we play literally ALL DAY, for up to 12 hours!!! Talk about insane...Needless to say I really enjoy playing it and Lisa and I have set a small budget to buy a used one.
I have also told myself that I am going to be a good boy with this item. I know it is fun to play, but it is very easy for a compulsive person like myself to get carried away not do the important things. I will not forget time for the important things like Lisa, our daughter, taking care of teh house, and sleep! The timing on buying an XBox is good because the regular tv season is coming to an end and we will have a little bit of time to devote to playing vs watching tv.
We are looking mainly at eBay. I looked at Yahoo auctions, bid on something, and did not meet the reserve. eBay seems to have a much bigger selection of auctions with XBoxes for sale. It crazy how many are for sale and even more so crazy how many people are BUYING these items!
So I spent some time on eBay during lunch yesterday and have a good idea now of what the market is asking for them. Lisa and I have a budget for this and have vowed not to spend more than that on this matter. Besides, this is a real treat for us and is mostly my Father Day gift.
I will keep posted on our future endeavors with this matter.

Picture Test

My good friend John McGleam at www.ckramer316@blogspot.com has taught me a few things about blogging. I actually owe him the thanks for getting me started on blogging in the first place as he sent me an e-mail inviting him to his blog and after seeing it, it inspired me to start my own.
So now I am trying to add pictures to my blog. Yes, I am still naive to this whole blogging thing. That is why I thank God for friends like John who have teach me in my naive ways the way of the world. Who knows what John and others are going to teach me. John's blog has gone international! People not only from outside Illinois read his blog, outside the US!!!
I can't say that I am exactly jealous as I always thought John was going to be know in this world for something. Heck, if he doesn't make it in radio I am sure he will go far in something.
Now we just gotta get him a woman!!!

The AFA

If you are Christian parent, I highly suggest you view the following website:
http://www.afa.net/
The AFA is a Christian Pr0-Family website dedicated to helping the future of America's family. I get regular e-mails from them about issues, especially political matters, going on in our country. Like most organizations, I do not agree with EVERYTHING they push for, but most of it (probable 90%) I support.

Not everything the ACLU does is good

Imagine if your son or daughter had just died after serving our country in Iraq or anyplace in the world and people started protesting at your child's funeral service. While states are scrambling to place laws into affect preventing this form happening, the ACLU is already declaring parts of these laws unconstitutional and are challenging these lawas in court:

In case you have not seen this commercial, it is a great feat of genius and another reason why I would buy a Honda.
